The risks of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal (LHR) is a cosmetic and medical procedure. As we know all medical procedures have some kind of risks.

If you are planning to go for a LHR treatment, you should stay out of the sun at least a few weeks prior to the procedure. Having a tan or dark colored skin can make the treatment difficult or even impossible. You must also take note of some medications that are not safe to use when having a LHR treatment. If you are on any medication at all, it is important to let your doctor know before the procedure begins.

Most patients who have experienced LHR did not, in fact, feel any pain. However, some individuals may experience a small amount of pain, but it is often manageable. Shave closely right before your treatment begins and this will minimize the pain. If you are concerned about the pain associated with your hair removal procedure, speak to your doctor about the possibilities of anesthesia.

Complications are rare but skin burns, pigmentary changes and even scarring may occur. The risk of skin burns are increase because of:

  • Melanin pigment increment,
  • Hair's density and thickness increment,
  • Impulse's energy increment,
  • Treatment's time increment.

The good news is that these risks are very rare if the procedure is done properly. Thus it is very important to find out the history of the place or person who you are planning to choose..

When you leave the office, you should be slightly red and you may see red circles in more sensitive areas of your skin. Old technology lasers left you burned for a few days, but newer technology should leave you recovered within an hour.
